Club Nacional de Football announced on Wednesday the termination of Nicolás "Diente" López's contract, ending his agreement that was set to run until December 2026. The club posted an emotional video on its social channels, thanking the striker for returning home and for his time in the tricolor shirt.
What exactly happened?
Nacional stated that, by mutual agreement, the contractual link with López was terminated. The decision came after head coach Jorge Bava decided not to include him for the remainder of the Intermedio Tournament and the final phase of the Clausura. In the official message, the club highlighted: "Thank you Nico for coming back home, for defending these colors and for writing a new chapter with this jersey. Success in what comes next!".
Why was the relationship ended?
During the first half of 2026, López lost his place due to muscular injuries and strong competition in the forward line. Although he had been a key figure in the 2025 Uruguayan championship, his recent matches showed fewer minutes and less impact. With the official separation, the player is now free to negotiate with any club, and overseas interest is already being reported.
What did López leave behind at Nacional?
The striker returned to the club in early 2025 for his second spell. In 58 official games he scored 27 goals and provided 9 assists, helping Nacional win the 2025 title. His average of 0.47 goals per match kept him among the team's most efficient forwards, even though the latest season was marked by ups and downs.
What does this mean for the Tricolor?
With López's departure, Nacional leans on internal attacking options while still scouting the market. The team sits 2nd in the Primera División – Clausura, with 27 points, 8 wins, 6 draws and 1 loss, and a recent form of WDDDD. In the goal table, the club has scored 25 and conceded 11, holding a +14 difference, but remains 8 points behind leaders Peñarol in the title race.
What lies ahead?
López can now sign as a free agent and, according to close sources, his next destination may be abroad. Meanwhile, Nacional focuses on consolidating its league position and seeking reinforcements that keep the pressure on Peñarol. The board assures that the club will continue working to stay competitive in the second half of the year.
